So I have no clue why this is happening, I'm hoping perhaps someone on here has the answer otherwise my research will continue.

I've noticed lately and at first I thought I was seeing things but lately, a couple of my hens are laying eggs and the air cells have been at the smaller end. NO I'm not imagining it. They are literally at the smaller end of the shell. NO they are not shipped eggs. They are being laid from my own flock. I believe it's Two hens that are doing it. Now I have tried to hatch these babies but here's the problem, I get all the way to hatching day and they die off before hatching. My guess is because they expect the air cell to be at the larger end and since it's not, they cant get air and are suffocating. They don't internal pip and I believe because they don't know where to do this.

This is only occurring with my Chickens, I have not seen this with my ducks. Its very odd and very strange, but I am able to get the chicks to grow, just having a hard time getting them to hatch out and again I do believe it's the air cell growing the wrong way. What's REALLY CONFUSING is how to set them on the turner. LOL......

I will say it's not they way the eggs are being placed either, because it's happening as soon as the eggs are laid. It's the CRAZIEST thing I have ever seen...

anyone have any thoughts??

Oh Kathy....I hope you have an answer, because I don't......lol

I wonder if you incubated them upside down if they would hatch and pip into the air cell? Everyone that has asked this question before was just candling from the bottom and confusing themselves, once they candled from the top they could see it clearly were it was supposed to be. I have honestly not seen anyone who really had the air cells in the bottom. I'm stumped.

Do they grow well even though they are in the wrong end (the air cell I mean, not the chick).

Yes, they grow very well, in fact I will send over a pic, it's the strangest thing, I do set them on the turner upside down and yes they grow but never internally pip. Let me get a pic so you can see what I'm talking about, IT"S absolutely Buzzare to me..

OK update:

Now candled..

you may have to zoom in, but the air cell is PULSATING, so hopefully by tomorrow, this little guy will internal and external, so we can see what hatches. I have this egg under a hen because I had no luck, I wanted to see if the girls have better luck.

if you zoom in you can see the air cell and it's right underneath where I have 19 written on it.. No that's not the date, I don't know the date because the girls are sitting that's actually the day, I saw development, so I could a be a week or so off..

How very strange!! Looking at your pics there does not seem to be a defined pointy end to the egg. How about giving hatching in cartons with the air cell up a whirl?

Maybe it's pot luck with air cells because of not having a defined pointy and fat end.
