So, this morning I noticed my 1 year old peacock was limping a bit. We have been having issues with bumblefoot in our chickens so I assumed it was that and figured I could take care of it when I got home from work. Well when I got home it seemed much worse, he wouldn't put any weight on it and was barely even walking. So I caught him (first time I've had to do that but it was easier than expected although I got pooped on and it got everywhere! Bleh!) and checked him out but it doesn't seem to be bumblefoot at all. There was a spot that seemed scraped up on his middle toe but hardly more than skin (is it skin or scales? Who knows?) deep.
Now I'm thinking it's broken or he tore something but there's no obvious breaks. Any ideas what else it could be? If a toe is broken, is there much I can do to treat it?

Do you have a smaller pen he could stay in for a while? he won't like it, but the idea is to restrict movement. I don't mean one where he can't turn around, but one big enough where he can walk around some but not have to jump or run. You could try giving him baby aspirin in a treat, three times a day. Does he have heat or swelling or inflammation at the site? Can you compare it with the other foot? can you control him enough to try soaking the foot in epsom salts and warm water? I hate having to handle ours....

I have a pen that's 4x8 with low perches so I put him and his two mates in there. They usually sleep on my chimney so I figured that would hurt pretty bad when he gets down in the am.
There didn't seem to be any swelling but I did only get to look at him a few minutes before he pooped all over me (as he was laying on his back) and decided to jump up and smear it everywhere. I swear I can still smell it even after changing clothes and washing my hands 10 times!
I didn't even think to check for warmth. I think I'll keep himin the pen for a couple days and if there's no improvement, I'll check him out again. I feel bad, thinking it was bumblefoot, I was a little more rough than I would have been if I thought something was broken/torn. I'm worried I could have made it worse :/

If he'l eat out of your hand, you can give him the baby aspirin in a treat. That's how I treat my cocks, med wrapped up in a tiny ball of bread and small amount of peanut butter (which keeps the medicine in there). They love that. I would give him aspirin two or three times a day, if you can. Poop is a great weapon, I know.

Just an update: I put all 3 peas in the pen for about 3 days and Predator (the peacock) seemed to be walking much better. Well of course, I felt bad having them locked up, so I let them back out, and after a couple hours, his foot seemed even worse than before. Well, back in the hole they went. I even checked his foot/leg over again (no poop this time!) but couldn't find anything.
It's been two days since they have been in there and now you can't even tell he was hurt in the first place. He is putting his full weight on the leg even. I have no idea what's going on with him. Just to be on the safe side though, I'm going to keep them in there for at least a week...

Aw he looks tuckered out! It's funny, I did so much research about guardian animals and I never saw anything about how protective peacocks are. I had a duckling with some medical issues and every time I had to catch him, my peacock went bonkers...

I would. It's probably a sprain or bruise which just needs more time to heal.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm so worried anything would happen to him. He's like an lgd, haven't had any losses since he started free ranging...

Several years ago one of my males knocked over a pitch fork in our barn, the wooden handle slammed down on one of his middle toes. He didn't really start to limp for a day or 2 and if I hadn't been close by I never would have figured out what happened to him. After 1 or 2 weeks black and blue developed on the top of that toe, really bad bruise. He had that black and blue toe and limped for probably 6 months, the feet seem slow to heal. Just a thought.
