I have a little bared rock hen who's about 27 wks old and has been laying for 2wks now. She was an every other day layer but this week she's laying a good egg in the am and in the pm she lays a soft shell egg. She then eats the soft shell, just hers she's not going after anyone else's eggs. Now that this has happened the other hens have started running her off of the food, we have been giving her extra oyster shells and calcium dust by her self. Any ideas on what's going on? No other symptoms of illness vet said she's healthy.

One of our hens layed several soft eggs in the first month or so she was laying. All my layers are the same age so it could have been a RIR, Barred. Rock, or White Rock. Oddly, while every "real" egg they've layed has been in the nest box, the shell-less eggs were all under the roost--like it slipped out and surprised her.

From what I've read, if it occurs when they first start laying, it is nothing to worry about. The reproductive system just gets a little out of sync.

Later in life, or if it's persistent, it can be a sign of poor nutrition, insufficient calcium, or a health problem.
