On my way to turn our 6 week old baby turkeys out in their outdoor enclosure for the afternoon, one of the babies flapped their wings (about a one foot wing span already) and got away. I had just unhooked the latches on the coop door, and wouldn't you know it - that darned feisty turkey managed to hang itself on one of the latches! It was just a little latch, but it tore right through the front edge of my baby turkey's wing, exposing the membrane covering the bone, etc... At first there was no blood, but after about 5 minutes, I noticed it bleeding a bit.
I don't know what to do! The hole is about 1/2 inch long, and the skin is pulled back. I grabbed the chick, brought it in, swabbed the area with peroxide, smeared a little bit of antibiotic ointment on it (it was hard to get "on" the area), and then remembered I had Wonderdust for the horses. So, I topped it all off with a generous puff (top and bottom) with Wonderdust. I'm thinking that, after the antibiotic ointment, the Wonderdust won't really do it's job. I just wanted to "do something" before leaving the poor baby to come seek assistance!
So - I'm wondering - after the bird calms a bit, should I clip the feathers away from the wound? Once I clean it again, should I just Wonderdust it? I am pretty sure that, as is, if it heals, it will heal around the edges of the hole. I will post a picture when I can!
Also - should I wrap the wing? And, I only have two turkeys, and I don't want to stress the injured one by separating it from it's "buddy".
