Hello! I think I have a pair of Polish, but would love opinions on genders. I’ve searched these forums for laced polish genders and often no updates are given, so my plan is to update here every so often until I know for sure what gender(s) I have.

They are named Thing 1 & Thing 2 (from Dr. Suess’ The Cat in the Hat).

I’ve learned that the laced polish are often much later to grow wattles & combs compared to the white crested blacks, blues, etc. Maybe that’s due to being bearded. It seems by 12 weeks an answer is obvious though. (Pointed crazy crest with skinnier feathers or rounded full crest with wider feathers)

Our two buff laced polish were purchased as pullets (according to the new Rural King employee; the bin sign was handwritten and only said buff laced polish), but I called the hatchery the next week and found they were straight run & hatched 3/23. Today they are seven weeks old.

I’m noticing that they have feathered in a different rates, have differently shaped tail feather tips, and the amount of eyeballs visible is different as well. Also their combs are placed differently on their heads as well (both in width of the V and how far back on the vaulted head it is). One has been lighter in color & now has wing patches of darker color.

I’m guessing the boy traits are:
Feathering in more slowly
More face/eyeball visible under the crest
Wing patch darker color
Pointy tail feathers
Crest set further back on head & is smaller

I’ve noticed Thing 1 has round tail feather tips and Thing 2 has pointy tail feather tips—is this used to determine gender this early?

Wattles & combs:
No difference in color yet, no real wattle growth yet

Also I’ve noticed a patch of darker color feathers on Thing 2… would this be a sign of a cockerel? (Random hatchery photo of a rooster for reference) patch & pointy tail feathers circled as my early “boy clues”… if I’m correct.

Thank you!!

She’s beautiful!
Thank you! I really hope they are both pullets, as we already have two nice roosters and don’t need any others. Perhaps one is just feathering in a few days slower! 🤞🏼
Thanks! Definitely give it a few weeks. By the 10-12 week mark it should be pretty obvious. Polish are tricky and this variety isn't especially easy either! :)

Here are a few more photos.

It’s only been a few days, but the only I was thinking looked less girly—looks more girly today! (The one coming down the ramp. Excuse the poo, that one is not easy to catch like the girly girl in my hand, and thus mornings before I let them out, is best for photos.) Perhaps she is just a few days slower in feathering out!

Update: 9.5 weeks old now. Still no wattle growth or comb growth or color there… but the pointy tail feathers and the looser crest feathers still make me a teeny bit unsure of Thing 2. Most days I say I think both are pullets, but today, I second guessed that. None of my eight young birds act like males (no crowing or chest bumping or squaring off, etc). They are all between 9.5 & 10.5 weeks old, so maybe another month & I’ll know for sure.
:wee
But maybe not since one is a Silkie!

Pics up next… I forgot to label the pics with their names!
