A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Can't see your picture Bannturkmom...but welcome!

Hey Fiesty! Aren't weekends the best? So what breed is the rooster? Interesting that he's not crowing. I had one Australorp hen who I would have bet was a rooster. She developed a huge comb & waddle, much larger than her sisters. I was convinced she was a roo. But she just ended up being a hen with a huge comb!

I go through the same thing with my turkeys. Anything new is suspect! Then eventually thoroughly inspected. I leaned one of those long handled pruning things against a tree yesterday. It was thoroughly inspected for almost an hour!

Turkey Math may be worse that chicken math! I'm voting for Ralphie being our TURKEY MATH POSTER BOY! Due to his rare and now famous calico flock!

I'm also nominating Chaos & Aurora for possible inclusion into our TURKEY MATH HALL OF FAME. Chaos due to the fact that he figured out genotypes and will be adding multiple hens accordingly. And Aurora for convincing her DH she needs three fully loaded incubators!

I discovered a quick way to rid yourself of annoying sales people! Yesterday I stopped in one of those garden/outdoor furniture stores. They are having a sale. I have two wooden garden chairs, one of which has been parked in my turkey pen all summer. Would like to reunite them, so am looking for a new chair for the turkey pen. I was specific with the sales person...needed wide arms ( for perching ), something heavy enough that the girls won't knock over and a durable finish I can scrub. Nothing was living up to my specs. I could see the sales person was frustrated. That's when I finally admitted what I wanted the chairs for. Poor gal just looked at me and drifted away never to be seen agsin! Guess they don't get a lot of folks looking for turkey friendly lawn furniture!

Well, I have survived my cold. It was a close call, but luckily I pulled through!

And, whew, lots of catch up reading here!

First, I had better be invited to the Ralphie/Carrie wedding. Banshee will be my +1.

Second, I am so confused with all the genetics talk! But I feel smarter somehow, even though I started skimming....

Welcome to all the newcomers! I am certain you will find us to be great enablers to all your poultry math!

I have a situation here, my friends. I have a serious belly button problem on my hands.
Yes, I know you are all wondering how on earth my lapper and lurker could do anything remotely bad.
I blame poor supervision while we were gone. I'm sure there was a magpie involved teaching them to be such hooligans, as well. It is hard to keep the riff raff out.
The turkeys have taken over and occupied the deck.
As you know, this is the only dang place my DH will not let poultry hang out.
He is furious.
He has told me, in no uncertain terms, will I be getting a tom unless I can get the girls off the deck for good.
What can I do?!

Last night I wrangled them into the chicken coop (they can't get out, like they can in their coop). Well that was a sight.
Banshee let me put her in, but I chased Tomahawk in circles around the coop for a good half hour.
I know when I let them out, they will move right to the deck.
I am considering poultry netting over their coop area. Keep them in jail for a bit.
I don't know if jail can reform such bad behavior in this case....

Wow. lots of reading.
First we are in Paducah, Ky. We ended up on the freeway. We drove for 6 hours stopping at every cool little site we found. Neat house, cool old barn, "oh, look theres a antique store". and we found we were still 10 hours from Nashville where we need to be tonight for the Opry.

We found a really "quaint" town. New Boston Ill. I never thought deliverance was filmed in Ill. There is an old grain port there. Establish in like 1230 or some where around that. REALLY old. It is not a huge area at all. The river ( Mississippi ) is huge muddy and beautiful there. Back home the river is maybe 100 yards wide at most.

There is one little cafe in town. We ate there. I wish I had thought to take a picture of the sign that says "cafe" on it. It is lighted. Think heat lamp with poor wiring. The electric wires where just taped together, no wire nuts and not covered. A huge No No in Minnesota, the ultimate Nanny state, We allow nothing remotely unsafe anywhere.

They had "catfish steaks" for 5.50 on the menu, I asked what a catfish steak was, thinking I did not want a real boney fish to pick around. They said it was a steaked fillet. So I had it. WOW best fish I have had in ages. The pieces were thick and not over cooked. I tried the first piece and it had a slight muddy taste and was worried. It was not quite as well cooked as I wanted, I asked them to throw it in the deep fryer for a minute. They did it was perfect, no other piece even had a tinge of muddy taste!

We even got a salad with thew fish, ton of fries and a huge cup of tapico pudding for dessert, the whole meal for both os us was 14 bucks with tax!

BTW do not expect fancy! It was attached to the only bar/casino in town. Not sure how legal the casino part was.

The waitress was busy on a slot machine so a customer at the bar got us our drinks and wrote our order out until the waitress was free.

Things like this delayed us so at about 3 we headed for the freeway and ended here at about 10 pm last night.

I have decided to split up my writing today, it will be too long otherwise. I am so glad I have a real keyboard that connects to my Iphone by blutooth, or I would not be able to tell you any of the cool stuff. BTW We saw llamas and donkeys and small cows, I want one of each!

Welcome new long name ending in Mom. I think for breivity we will just have to call you BM, as we have a MM already. BM if you go to safari or whatever your phone uses for a browser and open the full version in it you can post pictures, the apps fail to BYC most the time for me.

One can never have too many turkeys.

MM You have a bellybutton problem, you may have to divorce him if he does not get more reasonable on the Toms....

I would try a little "white" lie to him, Tell him a Tom likes to strut in the open and they seldom if ever go onto the deck. The Tom would cure the deck turkey problem.

I am not sure there is going to be a wedding. As much as I know Carrie wants me, I am not sure she is ready to make the required sacrifices for this to work out.

As I said on the minnesota surviviors thread, She needs to be willing to give her rugrat up to her current hubby. I will not do diapers full time at my age! I also read she has "foofoo" dogs. I do not do foofoo's! I have real dogs. and finally she has to learn to eat correctly.

She is a vegan or vegetarian. That cannot be, I need a place to get rid of Bellybutton turkeys and for my excess CX's. If she is not going to help me eat a bellybutton, I cannot be happy.

Also she seems to be a tad high maintenance, She seems to be against turkey roosts in the jet. How could I live with that? JJ was looking forward to a vacation in Fuji.

We will see how it goes, I am willing to work with her, but she has to meet me halfway. I will go down as low as just two turkeys per flight. If she cooks the turkey and it is good, that could help. She at least has to eat chicken though. I cannot move on that.

TTYL...

Hi Ralphie! Sounds like a cool trip so far! Paducah is not far from me. I could have met you to pick up Penguin! By the way, the Mississippi River is a mile wide in Memphis. I work in a 100 year old cotton warehouse overlooking the river. Love it!

I'm seeing Carrie ' s foo foo dogs as a huge problem. If a man asked me to get rid of my dogs that would be a relationship ender! Hmmmm....you may want to reconsider your pending marriage.

There you go MM! Ralph has a great solution to the deck issue! Just divorce your DH! :lau

Ralph, travel safe & keep us posted!
