>~* A Howl At Midnight>~* A FORGOTTEN DOGS ROLEPLAY!

Seeker raised her head, ears pushed forward as a strangled howl filled the air. "Alpha, Riverfire, you hear that?" She growled, cocking her head to try and pick up it's direction.

Rain's howl slowly died down, a strange gurgle filling her throat as the she-dog's fangs punctured it and blood dripped from her parted jaws. She tried to jerk backwards, but that only succeeded in tearing the weak dog's jugular even worse.
She gave a odd gasp, desperate for air but none reached her lungs as a growing fire consumed her throat and ebbed down her body. Slowly, she crumpled to the ground, half dragging Avalanche down with her as the life creeped out of Rain's body forever.
Riverfire, who already had his ears pricked, growled a response. "Yeah, I did. I say we go and kill some rogues." He was poised, and seemed ready to jump into the bushes at any second. His eyes were hard and determined, and it was with some restraint that he looked to Birch. "Alpha?"
---
Avalanche unhooked her jaws from Rain's body, the same satisfaction in her eyes as before as she looked at her newest kill.
"A patrol might have heard that howl," Vulture stated quietly. It was almost a warning, but not quite.
Avalanche considered her chances. On one paw, more death would be exciting. One another.. depending on the size of the patrol, there was a chance of defeat. She growled in indecision, but finally turned and headed into the undergrowth, her brother following behind.

Riverfire opened his muzzle, and it looked like he was about to argue. But then he reluctantly closed it and nodded.

Avalanche grinned with a savage glee in her eyes and lunged forward, sinking her fangs in Rain's throat.

Birch already had heard the howl, and at Riverfire's questioning glance, she nodded. "Stay together. Don't do anything stupid," she glanced at Riverfire, eyes narrowed. She believed Seeker had enough restraint, but she wasn't so sure about Riverfire. She took off through the undergrowth, following in the direction she had heard the howl at top speed.
She tripped suddenly, her gaze far too trained on the path ahead to see what was in her way. It was something warm, and with it something wet and sticky, metallic smelling. She scrambling to her paws, her white pelt now sticky with the blood she had fallen into.
Rain's body was at her paws, her pelt still warm though her open eyes held no life, staring at the infinite abyss of darkness above, her throat torn open, the life drained from her before she even had a chance.
Birch sat, staring at the she-dogs body with a lowered head. Then she tilted her muzzle to the sky, searching the stars above her, but found no answers. "She's gone," she murmured when Seeker and Riverfire approached, not looking away from the stars. "Another one of the pack is gone."

Seeker followed them slowly, making sure that she didn't leave Hawk, Birch, or Hollyshadow behind.
"Yeah, Obsidian, they're gone." She muttered, wincing as her previous running had allowed the claw wounds one her back that the white wolf from Canyon pack had inflicted on her to re-open and let small droplets of salty smelling blood roll down her side. What'd he say his name was? Snowdrop? Well, curse him. She thought to herself grouchily, trying to think of anything to keep her mind from wandering back to her dead sister and pack-mates.
But even that soon failed as she found herself catching up to the younger dog. "They were killed by a large, rogue he-dog is all we know. No one saw him, the only way we even found out was Dark's howl." She murmured quietly and emotionlessly, eyes stuck towards the shadows before them-- As though fearful of seeing some dog jump out at them.

Paw step after paw step, Birch was slowly leading the group back towards the camp, her paws falling in a slowly trot. "No," the young alpha answered the she-dog's question, her head low, searching for any scents, pack mates or rouges, in the leaf litter. "I don't believe there was anyone else on patrol."

Seeker nodded slowly, picking up a shared depression in the alpha's voice. She lowered her snout, trying to pick up any scents, before turning to look at the dogs around her.
Raksha was the farthest away from her, her head raised in a proud arch. Hawk, Hollyshadow, and Cave were taking up the rear, Birch was leading them with her head low to the ground-- No doubt searching for the scent of the killer, Obsidian was beside her, looking rather dazed, and Hollyshadow--
She stopped in her tracks, whirling around. "Where's Hollyshadow? She can't have run off, again..." She muttered, cold eyes glaring into the shadows for the she-yote, before strained whine reached her ears from somewhere in the surrounding woods. "You hear that? Someone's hurt. It's gotta be her." She growled, beginning to take off in that direction. Not again, not again.

Birch whipped around, muzzle tilting upward as a howl split the air, and Seeker was muttering about Hollyshadow, before she took off. She was about to follow her, but paused at Hawk's side. "Take everybody to camp. Do not come looking for us. I need you in camp, make sure no one leaves." Her cold alpha stance faded briefly, her jaws parting again, more words on the tip of her tongue, until a whine echoed in the distance. "Be careful, Hawk." Then she turned and took off after Seeker, easily catching up to the she-dog. "Careful," she growled. "Who knows if there's more of them lurking around. There's certainly more then one scent."

As Birch and Seeker split off from the main pack, Raksha's head snapped up. Her eyes narrowed as she struggled to listen through the faint ringing in her ears. Was she just that exhausted?
Her trot slowed to a walk. It was hard to keep putting weight on her injured leg; it sang with pain, jabbing spikes along her tendons with every step.
Don't look at it, she told herself. You'll make it home, and then, maybe, you can get it looked at. Just get home.

Cave caught up to Raksha, keeping a tail-length of space to her left.
"You okay?" she asked.
Raksha spared her a sideways glance and nodded. She was panting hard, head level with her back and facing determinedly forward.
"You're limping like you got bit by a snake or something," Cave said, a weak attempt at a joke. She leaned forward to get a better look at Raksha's leg, and she bared her teeth in an almost threatening growl.
"It's probably infected," Raksha hissed quietly. "But we can't worry about it till we get back to camp, so just - ow - just let me be."
Frowning, Cave's ears pricked nervously. "Alright," she said.
After safely delivering all of the dogs that Birch had entrusted him with, Hawk decided to take the liberty of addressing the pack himself.
But instead of putting himself up on a leader's pedestal to get their attention, he crouched down low on his haunches right in the middle of camp, as though he were about to deal out an offensive attack on his own pack.
"This is a complete lockdown," he growled, putting grating enunciation into every word. "No one goes out..."
His claws flexed out and sunk into the worn dirt. "...or comes in."
"Seek to defy that and you'll be answering to your own packmates' claws. This is not a game." He swallowed and straightened up, losing his aggressive resolve when he devoted a heartbeat to realization. "Lives are being taken." But his lips flipped back, rage fresh at the thought of the imbecilic carelessness everyone seemed all too content to let destroy them. "Lives that could've easily been kept."
With a snort, he shook a healthy amount of his anger free, but kept just enough to be dominant. "As Alpha's assigned stand-in--" Just a temporary role, right. "--I want able-bodied hunters posted at every edge of camp's perimeter. We're putting an end to this."

Riverfire snarled with rage. "Those mange-hearted mud-furred wolves will pay for this!" He howled. A sudden thought struck him silent. I hope Raven didn't decide to go on a walk..

Seeker flung herself after Birch and Riverfire, her heart palpitating with a uncontrollable speed. She nearly met Birch's own fate of collapsing in the blood, but managed not to, then almost skidded into Birch herself.
She crept up beside the other she-dog to peer down at Rain's broken body, a stray and violent shiver running down her spine. "She was so... Timid." She murmured, bending down to give her dead pack-mate a gentle nudge. "Six dogs in less than a day." She whispered under her breath, before standing up straight and backing up. What would Dark say if she knew her friend was dead, too? She glanced between Riverfire and Birch, unsure of what to do. I'm gonna find the dogs that did this, and I'm gonna tear them apart.

Night trotted forward, his face an unnerving calm as he eyed Hawk. "Understood. Which side of the camp do you want me and--" He threw a slightly annoyed look at the younger Faylane, scrambling up to them. "--Faylane, posted at?" He asked, casting a bland glance at the forest's edge. Best to let him figure out where to put everyone, as to not get everything jumbled up.

Frost slowly crept up, her tail waving nervously. "Should I stay at the medical den in-case anyone's hurt or take a post?" She asked quietly.

Oh. He did see a gigantic salmon.
She quickly hid the fact that she thought the catch was quite an impressive one, giving her face a look of impassiveness.
“Yeah. You Dust’s sister too?” Blanket’s voice was laced with sarcasm. She peered back into the water, spotting another fish. It wasn’t as large as Shade’s fish, but it also wasn’t so far away that she’d have to enter the water to get it. With one fluid snapping motion, the slippery fish was clenched between her perfect white teeth.
She set this fish on the pile as well. The scruffy dog appeared to be trying to getting her attention. Her gaze barely passed his massive grin and big doe-eyes before she went back to the water.
Her own serene reflection stared back at her. Much better.

(Oops)
Shade grinned again, giving a huffy laugh at her sarcasm. "Oh yes, definitely." He said, watching her put the fish on their pile. "Nice catch."
With a wave of his tail he stuck his entire face into the water once more, but when he raised it again the only thing he had for it was a mouth full of water. He spat it out, coughing as it dripped down the wrong side of his throat. Nice one, Shade. Real impressive. Bet she loved that.

Blanket snorted. "You trying to catch a cold?" she asked. The side of his face was now drenched in the chilly water. He looked ridiculous. She absentmindedly dipped a paw in the water. It might be a while before more come along. We honestly got lucky with those first few.

Birch lowered her head as Seeker entered the scene, unable to muster the rage that Riverfire expressed. She merely stood, shaking her pelt. "Camp. Now." She rasped, glancing between the two dogs, already heading in that direction.
They quickly approached camp, Birch's heart thudding with the fear that something was waiting in the shadows, that she, Seeker and Riverfire would meet the same, horrifying fate as their packmates. She didn't want to be scared but it was the only thing she felt, and she couldn't turn it off. At least I can feel something.
She ducked her head as they entered the camp, lifting her head once she entered. She didn't pause as she entered camp, launching herself onto the alpha's rock. "River Pack!" She raised her voice, looking down at them. "Please gather for a pack meeting."
