Adding more nestboxes

I have a smaller coop (maximum 20 birds) and a fully enclosed outdoor run that's 240 square feet. The coop has 3 nestboxes for our current 11 hens that open from the outside. The 11 (was 12 until recently were always fine sharing the boxes. I have 4 chicks on the way and next year possibly more. I'm guessing I'll need at least 1 more box. I can't fit anymore inside the coop, can I add a couple random ones outside the coop? If so what kind (covered or uncovered tops) and how would I make them (what materials)? Do I even need another nest box?

Hi
Most chickens squash into their favorite nest box. I guess what I would do is just wait to see if you think they are fighting over nests or seem very overcrowded. If I was to put a nest outside I would have a covered box so it would be more sheltered from wind and rain. As for materials I don't know. I hope this helps and good luck with your chicks :)
