I have nutritional issues (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome and Histamine Intolerance) that make it so I can't eat chicken eggs. I need to eat quail eggs because they are my only protein source right now and they may have to continue to be for a year or two.

I am looking into getting my own quail but keep running into feed issues.
I have allergies to gluten (wheat, barley, and rye), corn, and soy. I can't have gluten breathed in or touch my skin, so I have been trying to figure out a way to do my own feed.

What I am asking is if someone knows of a way to make a feed that will provide standard sized coturnix quail the nutrition they need?

That's going to be a tough one. They can eat vegetables but will need additional protein. Boiled eggs is an option but you could also use black soldier fly larvae. Meal worms are high in protein but also high in fat, so they should be considered a treat.

Good luck! Have you checked duck eggs? You might be able to eat those too.

Your goal here would be to combine a handful of ingredients that total 16% protein or better, and supplement oyster shell for calcium. Might want to ask on the chicken forum in case any commercial chicken feed exists without the ingredients you specified.

There is actually no bad advice in this link, as far as I can tell. The only ingredient not covered is BSFL which Nabiki mentioned above. https://silverhomestead.com/how-to-feed-quail-when-commercial-food-is-gone/

Sounds like you're in the middle of nightmare, sorry! :hugs

I don't think I'd be trying to raise animals if I was facing those conditions..

Here are a couple links with nutritional requirement information..

Bean and alfalfa sprouts are pretty high in protein I believe. You can buy seeds in bulk and sprout them yourself if they are something you are able to tolerate touching. I think alfalfa sprouts have the highest protein among the more common and easily accessible choices.

I wanted to add that I put spot lights that have little stakes to drive into the ground, in my pens. When the lights come on, they attract insects and the quail would gather around to catch them, they were so used to it, as dusk came, they would start to loiter around the lights. An infusion of freshly caught insects each night will help up the protein a bit too.
