I had a silkie chick hatch on June 28th, 2015 and was 99% sure it was a hen. The chick had the smallest comb until "she" was 30 weeks old and "her" hackle feathers never got really shiny, but yesterday, I heard my little chick crow! I already have 3 roosters!

My broody hatched 3 out of 5 Marans eggs I gave her this summer. Two of the birds turned out to be very obvious roos, with lovely golden hackle feathers and huge red combs, so obviously their plainer, black feathered sibling with the tiny comb had to be a hen. I even considered selling her to a friend who was looking for a Marans pair. Good job I didn't - at 6 months old 'she' turned out to be a 'he'! How unlucky is that - 3 roos out of 3 hatched birds!
