Arizona Chickens

I have been hatching for others recently. going to give a them each a couple of the new girls, so that will stop my "need" to hatch, lol.. hubby and I are taking off 28th, 29th of May and won't be back till the 4th or 5th of June. I don't want to have my house/pet sitter having to deal with chicks. I can always let her know a couple of days before we get home to put some of the eggs in a carton on the table lol

My oldest girl's egg's are getting pretty big in size now, but the 2 pullet's eggs that just started laying are still small. The pullet's are laying a nice shade of green though.

But if you have way too many rooster's on hand, then doing them one at a time could mean that you have to eat chicken for every dinner time. Yes, I could build another pen, and I intend to do so. But I want to put more hen's and 1 rooster into it, not a bunch of roo's that are waiting to be my dinner. :gig
nah... heritage breeds aren't like the cornish cross that have to be done by a certain time or they have heart attacks. I do a few at a time when I get around to it. A few younger ones for fryers/bbq, a few slightly older for roasting, and a few even older for broiling. Unless you're doing the massive 100 egg hatches you can get away with one chicken dinner a week from about 5 months old to 8 months old before they get too tough for anything but soup.

I don't want to have to worry about any of the flock having heart attack's. To me those don't seem to be very healthy of a chicken then. I would rather have the heritage breed's, or mixes of them. They have more vigor.

Has anyone here sent a chicken for necropsy? The lab I found wants $75 or more for one and I can't afford that.

I suspect Ruby had Marek's but I don't know and wanted to find out for sure. So far no one else shows symptoms but I really want to know what happened to her before I do anything about hatching.

Have you tried Midwestern? I hear it can be as little as $40 there.

You can also send in samples to this place, so you don't have to send a whole bird, and can send in samples from living birds.

Hello! I'm new to posting, though I've been a member for a couple years now. I joined just so I could get some Aloha chickens from Sommer.

I am in SE Arizona, near Sierra Vista. We currently have 80 some birds, mixed breeds mostly. And 3 geese.

I am linking to my post about seramas for sale. We will be catching and weighing these guys later to see what class they are.

Thanks!

Also if you froze her she can't be used for necropsy. They can only be refridgerated.

:rant

I suppose I could get the others tested if the one does testing from living birds. Damn it, I put her in the freezer because I didn't want the carcass to go bad. :barnie
