Any poultry breeders planting bamboo to shade chicken runs or coops? I've got a few species started, and will add some local wild grown "golden" bamboo from along the Rio Grande in a few weeks. The problem is that stuff is a "running" bamboo and will take over the acre! I'm not interested in putting down barriers or the like, or having it invade my neighbors or get into the irrigation canal, so most of the bamboo I've started are of the "clumping" varieties. When I get enough culms to transplant they will go along the fence line in the back. Right now they are contained--both running and clumping--in stock tanks or raised beds.

Of course, your area would need the shade as much as my area does. Messy indeed. But you've got to love the ease with which the local bamboo takes over a patch of ground. That's WHY I'm going to plant it between my backyard and the back 1/3 of an acre. I should be able to keep it at bay in that area. I hope!
