We brought home some Barred Rocks about 3 months old a week or so ago. One morning we noticed one of the hens was missing a toe and thought she came that way and we just didn't notice. The next 2 days another emereged from coop missing a toe. Then The rooster was missing a toe and spur. Some say mites, many other say rats or mice Please help. We've dusted for mites and are getting rat traps today. I just need to know what is going on. We've been raising chickens for years and ahve never seen or heard of this.

The most common causes for lost toes is frostbite in the last couple of months, or rats. Frostbite is usually noticed with black toe tips. How are they being housed? Do you have pictures of your set? Are they in roosts at night or on wire flooring?

It's been very warm here in TX so frostbite isn't an issue. They live in a coop every night and the roosts are round. There's hardware wire for the flooring.
