Bedding for Coop

Hello,
I am new to this site and having Chickens. I have moved to Edgewood, NM and we are going to get 10 chicks, I have googled the Starter food and when to start them on there regular feed. the problem I am having is what type of Bedding to use? The coop is being built right now and it is about 6"5 High 12'8 long and 8"5 wide. Help please

I like pine shavings but the chickens keep kicking it to the walls leaving the middle bare. Maybe I'm not spreading it thick enough. Straw always seemed to work well.

We used pine shavings in the coop.It's about 6" deep, most of it has been in there since April, I changed out some and added more about a month ago. Still no odor. We have 6 chickens. They do scratch and move towards the walls but I go in with a rubber broom/rake thingy about once a week and even it out.
