Beginner needing advice

I am looking to begin a backyard flock of egg layers and my coop will accommodate 6 chickens. My interest is in brown egg layers and would like input on what breed is suggested to begin my flock with. I am located in the Pineywoods of East Texas where the climate is hot and humid and winters are mostly mild. Any input would be much appreciated.

My wife and I were both raised in east Texas and have raised many chicken breeds and hybrids in that area. I would recommend Black Sex Links (Black Stars), which are friendly and hardy egg laying machines that handle the east Texas climate very well. I raised them for years, and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 large, brown eggs per hen per year. Whatever breed or hybrid you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
