Best chicken for brooding that is large?

I had cochin bantams at one time and they were excellent broody hens. Cochins also come in the larger size. You might want to look through the "breed" section of BYC found at the top of this page and do some research.

I have had good luck with Buff Orpingtons, and an Easter egger .

All three of my Black Sumatra hens have pretty much taken up permanent residence in the nesting box since spring broke and aggressively defend/protect their respective boxes from the other birds... They are the only full sized hens in my flock that are devoted to be broody, I have no shortage of barnyard bantams that will sit on eggs...

Orpingtons
Faverolles
dark Cornish

those are the breeds that come to mind.

I have a hatchery sourced Australorp that is brooding at 7 months old.

I went to mypetchicken.com and did their "breed selector" and only put 'Yes" as my answer for "Do you want a hen that will rear chicks?" It can up with 34 breeds. Here is the link. Hope it works!
