Best Chickens to get for year round egg production???

Being in New York you can't go wrong with the black or red (comet, etc.) sex links. You'll note the blacks are larger in size which aids in your climate but also consume more feed. I found the blacks to be friendlier than the reds. If eggs are all your after and not wanting a larger combed leghorn in your climate with unheated coops then sex links are the way to go for sure.

My experience with golden sex links leads me to say avoid them. Oviduct cancer and prolapse was common. I haven't been around Black Sex links for more than 30 years, so I don't know what others are experiencing. I've had healthy layers of the Australorp breed and mine is going on 7 yrs. now. Sex links lay much in a short period of time, but to see them with so many health issues and short lives has caused me to avoid them.
