Best method for leg tagging birds

If you use colored metal or plastic leg bands to help identify your birds, I'm interested as to what you've tried, what you liked, and what you didn't--as well as why. I want different colors for different hatches, and a numbering system, of course. I have seen some metal bands that can fit a variety of leg sizes, and could be snipped off if the bird outgrew them.

Plastic spiral leg bands are a poor long term method to mark chicks and chickens. Wing bands are a much better way and the bird doesn't outgrow wing bards.
