Better to feed in henhouse or in run?

I am a new member and having just read through some of the replies as to where to feed our girls I am now a bit concernedas I feed mine in the run .also soe of you are saying how you feed scraps can you please tell me if any of you feed potato peelings to your sa nd do you cook them first or not . I have 4 girls and had them since october 09:)

Thanks, everyone. Sounds like people definitely do it different ways, depending on their set-up, their climate, etc. I guess I'll have to experiment!

I didn't know potato peelings were toxic to chickens. I know the leaves are toxic to people. Does anyone have a list of foods/plants to keep away from chickens? It seems like if they free-range, they could eat anything that's growing in the area. Are they not smart enough to avoid toxic plants?

Hi ! I have my food in a galvanized container that looks like a long hot dog holder. That is suspended from the ceiling in the coop. I also have water in there (raised off the floor to keep dirt, etc. out. You know how they can fling stuff when they scratch around). It is heated in the winter. I also have a waterer (raised on brick to keep cleaner) outside in the run. They usually go in to roost and lay. Other than that, they are outside. I DO free range them from 2:00- 'til they go in for the night.
One suggestion for the chicken wire. I would bury, or at least bend, some of the wire out from the ground, not in, so any unwanted critters can't dig under it.

My feeder and waterer are under the covered area of the run. My nesting boxes are even in the run during the warmer months. They only use the coop to sleep and to dust bathe. I throw a small amount of scratch in the coop every few days so that they keep the 12" of shavings turned. In severe weather I do temporarily move the feed/water inside. It's just personal preference though, do what works best for you and the chooks.

most chickens dont eat toxic plants.my rule is ,dont feed em scraps that i would not eat myself. no bannana skins, tator skins, peanut shells, pork,a chicken would eat you if you let em!!

My birds always have plenty of feed and water. I have feeders and waterers inside my coop and in their run. I did it orginally when I integrated my hens and pullets. The hens would try to block the pullets from the feeder and waterer in the coop but it also works well if I'm gone for 2/3 days.
