Bird Dog with laying chickens how will they be effected

The oldest one did that with a pheasant. It ran around the yard and then it stiffened up and looked like it had aheart attack thought it was dead went to go pick it up and it flew off.
 
Are there breeds that are better than the others far as handling other animals. We have two austra's and two black sexlinks. I wanted dominiques but couldn't find any in the area plus two of them were free.
