The only thing I don't like about blu-cote is that it's so messy that it makes it difficult to see how the wound is healing if it's a bad one. All you see is the stain of blue and it doesn't do that much to help with healing. But if your goal is to cover up the redness, it will definately do that.
I sat and thought about it for a bit and I might have figured it out. The coloring in it. I know they are transferable and there is a segment of population that has bad reactions to them.
It looks like Vetericyn may be a good alternative to Blu-Kote. It is labeled for use on birds, says it is safe if licked by the animal, and can be used on a variety of wounds.
This year our sheep shearer would not use the blukoate on the cuts from hand shearing, and the girls can get some bad cuts; He's been using blue kote for over 20 years! So the girls have uncleaned booboos! I hoped for the best. THen, yesterday I asked the horse vet about why not to use blue kote--she didn't know any reason to not use it. I realize this is a chicken forum--just my most recent experiences with blue kote.
AND NO, IT DOES NOT COME OUT OF CLOTHING OR WALLS. IT ALSO IS VERY HARD TO REMOVE FROM HAIR, SKIN, EYES, LIPS! Oh and by the way, it tastes HORRIBLE! But I didn't get sick (at least, so far) and I've used it for years....on my chickens, ducks, geese & horses.
