Broken egg shell but no egg

I just collected eggs from the coop. One of the eggs had broken egg shell stuck to it. No sign of any egg insides, just a whole egg with another partial shell loosely stuck. I am wondering whether one is broken inside the chicken and it is partially coming out. I have 10 chickens, of which 6 should be laying, as they are ex-battery rescues. 4 are still too young. So although I can narrow it to 6, what should I look for? Get surgical gloves and prod the vent? Never done it, so I don’t want to hurt the chickens. Advice please.

That usually happens because an egg got broke than eaten in a box, than another hen lays her egg and the shell remnants get attached to the new egg.
