. I'm taking this one one inspiration at a time. I got the drift wood in but now I have no idea what I'm going to do for the rest of the background.

Try looking at how to do composition in art and some photos for reference to see if that might help. Nice so far though.

Oh trust me I have. I've looked at just about all the swamp related pictures google has to offer. I'm mostly debating whether I want to do an easy background or a hard one.

Maybe a simple and lighter background to make the croc stand out?

Actually I was thinking a limb covered in Spanish moss and a bit of grass with a really dark Forrest behind it.
