Can a Silver Welsh Harlequin have a dusky gene?

I have a 3 week old duckling I hatched from my flock and it was solid black, but the feathers coming in now look like they have rust pencilling/lacing. There are no eye stripes. The father drake is a Welsh Harlequin and I think the mother is probably a White Layer. But on the calculator, the only way I can get anything similar to the color of the duckling is if the Welsh Harlequin father has at least one dusky gene. He is a silver Welsh Harlequin from Metzer Farms, so is this possible? Without that dusky gene, the closest I can get is a bibbed black, which can't be right.

Also, when I do all wild genes except for the double li^h, the calculator calls it snowy. When I also change both M+ to m^d, it calls it "silver (Harlequin)". But from what I've read only gold Harlequins have that dusky gene. So I'm confused.

Yep! Very possible that he could be carrying it. Mom would have to be carrying it also to get a dusky duckling, but with white that's always a possibility because you don't really know what the underlying color genetics are.

Can you post a picture of the baby? Because with a white mother, black bibbed is also very possible.

Okay thank you, that would make a lot of sense! I can try to get a more recent one tomorrow if needed, and show the pencilling on his new feathers. He's the middle duck in the second photo (obviously 😁). Sometimes he looked brownish depending on the light, so I wonder if that's because of the rust color pencilling.

Id love to see a pic of it all grown up! We hatched out a Welsh x WL this spring too. Doesn't look like that though!
Here he is, almost 5 months old now 🙂. I've wondered if he maybe has a Khaki Campbell mother instead. He's on the small side. Hopefully I'll get some clues next season when I hatch some ducklings from him. What does your WH/WL look like?

He kind of looks exactly like what you’d expect lol I think he’s pretty so I decided to keep him. The two females are pure welsh from the same hatch. They’re about 10 weeks old. I’ve only had one cross so far because my WL commonly lays double yolk eggs lol
