Hello!!

So this week I got my first little flock of 7 chickens...

I have a 5 litre feeder that I have filled half way with pellets. Before joining this site i didn't know that they could be adjusted. I have adjusted mine to the lowest setting now. I have also been giving them scraps/greens everyday.

A person I know said that i'm over feeding them and that they could get fat. They said i should only be giving them 1 scoop of pellets a day or put the feeder in the run once a day?? Is this correct? cONFUSED!!!!

I never have restricted food or water of course I am not an expert. I only have 58+- hens and only had them since 73. There are people here that are real experts.

i also have heard about "over feeding". I have always allowed my chickens (and chicks when raising in a brooder) free access to food and water at ALL times. I also let them out to free range when I'm out in the garden and give them treats of meal worms, bread, oatmeal, veggies, and fruits. My chickens are perfectly healthy! They are not fat at all! I notice they don't go through their food as fast the more they are given treats and then I'll just back off so they get their nourishment from their food. I choose healthy treats and provide with plenty of space to exercise! In my short experience, it doesn't seem that chickens are glutinous animals. They will eat until satisfied and then move on to other activities. Now that said, my girls will never pass up a treat and will run to greet me every time I come to the coop hoping today is the day I bring something special! So I do have to ration my special treats! :)
