Background...i’ve never caponized a cockerel.

i’m a dentist...i work with instruments in tight quarters and most of what i do is just surgery in the mouth.

i’ve read the book from Stromberg...bought the instrument set...which i’ll replace half of with actual surgical stuff from my practice...watched 5 youtube videos...

question...two actually...

1. some people suture and most don’t. what’s your thought on this?

2. two incisions or one? is it easy to just take out both testes from one incision?

There is a long Caponizing thread in the Meat Birds section, have you seen it?

I've never done caponizing but I've been interested in it. From what I read it's thought to be less traumatic for the bird to make only one incision. No practical experience though.

i extract full bony wisdom teeth all the time...this shouldn’t be any more difficult;)

I also extract wisdom teeth all the time from Ihomedental and it is not difficult for me. After extraction Dr recommend me some medicine and I used it for just 3 days. After 3 days everything was fine. The wound also began to heal.
damn...that's impressive...and you're the kind of person that would survive the oregon trail. i would imagine that a lot of people obviously extracted their own teeth back in the day.

How did it go? I am asking because my husband is a veterinary specialist, experienced surgeon - just not for birds - and after watching the videos he says it should be super simple compared to kidneys 😂. Meanwhile I called my avian specialist and she said no, super dangerous and she would never do it. My cockerel is 4 weeks old currently and we were aiming for the 6-8 week window. So I was wondering how your experience went as a medical person, and did you use any sedation or local anesthesia or anything? He would do the procedure at home, not at the hospital - he doesn't want to get into bird anesthesia or anything like that.

I would say that my regret is that I didn't caponize all of the cockerels. Definitely cut them off from food 24 hours before so their abdomen area is empty and do the incision from one side. The testes aren't hard to find. Twist them out...don't pull. I used a modified mouth prop to spread the ribs and a hemostat to spread tissue. I bought the special testicular remover from Stromberg to remove the testicle
