Does anyone know (or can anyone guess) what type of chick this is? We were thinking Americana, but this mohawk that (he) has developed is quite unusual...

I've read that some 'boofheads' of feathering are caused by an internal leakage of cranial fluids into the tissues surrounding the skull. This can be bred in and out and has some lethal incarnations. I don't know if that's the case here, and I'm no expert on breeds, so not much help here, sorry. Best wishes.

Where did the bird come from?

I'm kinda leaning toward an Olive egger mix, from the small crest. Other possibilities for crested but clean legs are Polish and Crevecoeurs. Houdans have crests and clean legs, but 5 toes.

Crevecoeurs come in all white or all black. That chick isn't looking like it'll be either of those colors. Well, there used to be an all white Crev. but not sure there are any around anymore.
