Hi all I'm from Cedar Springs, Ga. I'm about to embark on my chicken journey. Any advice or tips will be greatly appreciated.

Head for the Learning Center, it's the best place to start. Then you may want to branch out to forums/threads that are of interest to you. Welcome to BYC. If you need help navigating or anything else, please let us know. THat is what we are here for.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. X2 on the Learning Center. Use it to learn as much as you can about raising chickens before getting them. If you're not sure about which breeds to get, Murray McMurray has an excellent "Chick Selector" at http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html to help you determine which breeds are the best choices for you. Also, there are some good charts you can peruse on chicken breeds and their characteristics at http://albc-usa.etapwss.com/images/uploads/docs/pickachicken.pdf, http://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/breed-list.aspx, and http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html. If you're looking for personal recommendations, I would recommend Black Sex Links (Black Stars) which are hardy, friendly, brown egg laying machines, or if you want to go with standard breeds (since hybrids won't breed true), I would recommend Black Australorps, which are very hardy, calm and gentle, and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. You can read the reviews on Black Se Links (Black Stars) and Black Australorps, as well as the other breeds, by clicking on the "Breeds" icon at the top of the page. Good luck in getting your flock.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You've gotten some good links and advice above, good luck with your chicken project!

Thanks for the greetings. Ive been checking out breeds online and believe I'm going to go with a few Barred Rock and Buff Orpington chicks. Those seem to be great dual-purpose chickens ( eggs and meat). Now I just need to build me a coop. :)
