Chicken Run-- what's in it?

I use deep litter and love it. I turn it about once a week or so. It has leaves, pine needles, scrap foods, grass clippings and lots of chicken poop. Next summer it's going in the garden -

In best boxes I put hay. I put pine shavings in the coop. But what in the whole run? It's a 18x18.

I love your run. Do your chickens stay in the run, or do they get free range time?
We have a large yard and I am letting them range most of the day right now, but I am getting sick of stepping in chicken poop all day!!!!
