Chickens Fav Treats!!!!

Make Cupcakes for Your Chickens!

Ingredients
  • 1 cup almond butter or peanut butter (all-natural and salt-free)
  • 1/2 cup chicken feed
  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 6 grapes
Instructions
  1. Heat up half of the nut butter in the microwave until it is soft.
  2. Mix with the remaining ingredients.
  3. Place six cupcake liners in a cupcake tin.
  4. Divide mixture evenly between liners, packing the mixture in tightly.
  5. Add a tablespoon of water at a time to the remaining nut butter and mix completely. Keep adding until the nut butter is soft enough to pipe onto the chicken treat cupcakes.
  6. Frost the cupcakes and top each one with a grape.
  7. Freeze (so that your chickens will have a nice cool treat).
  8. When ready to serve, remove and thaw for a few minutes.
  9. If your chickens are like mine, they might be a bit "chicken" at first and shy away from the cupcakes, but once they try them, they'll be happy!
Makes 6!!

I'll tell you this. I noticed a big change when I switched. They attack the food, their feathers are shinier and their poop is firmer and easier to clean. I started maybe a month ago or so I think.

I always thought it was a bad thing to have the feed go bad, so to speak. So I was a little taken aback when I read about fermented feed. I want to try that breakfast of champions recipe that is on fresheggsdaily.com. I am trying to figure out if I could do it with her recipe.

I just opened two bags from the local feed store...and oh my god...you'd never smelled anything so rank.
There's definitely a huge difference between damp feed going bad and making sour mash (fermented feed as we know it to be)

I would guess the difference is air flow right? I kept a lid on my FF bucket the first time and it turned rank.

I have just given my 8-10 week olds water melon and cabbage for the first time. They loved it.
I heard today from a chicken specialist breeder that dried meal worms are one of the disallowed foods as an import from China was infected with salmonella. Anyone else heard this?

I didn't hear that but certainly not a surprise. I was at TSC last night and almost bought the brand in the wild bird section but noticed it said Made in China. The Happy Hen brand was manufactured in the US so I bought it again. Mine love them and I shake the bucket to round them up if I need them to come to their coop early. VERY handy :)

We buy Hiland Naturals from a local dealer and got so used to that freshness and pleasant smell when I was around an open bag of Dumor it nearly made me gag.

well, I at first I thought "maybe that's just what it smells like3" so grabbed the bag I had just emptied and stuck my head in for a big whiff...it smelled sweet and grainy, even though it was a bag I'd had open for about a week before I used it up all the way.
I wish I could package this dumpster smell and send it to you guys so you could see what I'm talking about.
