Chickens love muddy water

A couple of times I've seen chickens scratch in a clear mud puddle to muddy the water before they drink. That doesn't bother me any more than seeing them eat dirt. When they are pecking at the ground they are not just getting grit. They get minerals and such from the dirt. What I don't like is stagnant water. That can be unhealthy, whether on the ground or in their waterer.

Many of ours will run past a waterer full of clean, cool water to drink out of a mud puddle in the driveway. Our back pasture has a low area that forms a shallow pond a hundred feet long after any decent rain. Quite a few chickens and all our turkeys will wade around in the water to find snails, worms and bugs driven up the grass stalks to avoid drowning. They don't seem to mind it at all.
