Chicks male or female

I think the dark one that keeps standing up so tall and is closest to the camera is a cockerel, @Yard farmer, what do you think? I think I see more comb and wattles on that one. Oops! GMTA!
There's a possibility that's a cockerel.
But if I'm correct in my breed identification, they (the black birds) are BSL.
In other words, they're an auto sexing breed. Girls are black/black-gold, Males will barred.

Do you know their breed, @Beachgirl8796 ?
More than anything I'm noticing the difference in posture in all of them. See how the pullets have their necks pulled down and the boys kind of have them herded away from OP into the corner.
I do agree with this.
It is suspect.

Also, I just want thank you all. I am very much a novice and I'm learning so much here. I joined a local chicken fb page and that did not go as well...more just making fun of people. This group has been fun and I'm learning a lot.
Of course, we're more then happy to have you here with us!
Everyone stars somewhere. Honestly, I still have so much to learn and I've been keeping chickens for 7, almost 8 years.
Im sorry to hear that.
Also, glad you're enjoying yourself here. :)

Kind words, Beach Girl. I still consider myself very much a novice myself, esp as concerns sexing chicks, and ESPECIALLY trying to sex them this young! Don't sue me if I turn out to be completely wrong! 😆 Probably the reason none of the experts chimed in is bc they know at this age it's mostly just lucky guesses, lol. As they get older let us know how right/wrong we were, ok? Good luck - and welcome to BYC!

My chicks are a bit older now. How do you know if they are male or female at this age, they are 5 weeks. Also, they are getting feathers so they look scraggly.

Hens will Develop wing and tail feathers sooner, round and neat feathers, longer wing feathers as pullets, and will develop lighter plumage. Roosters development of feather is slower and have shorter primary and secondary wing feathers as chicks.

I think you can kind of tell of their actions too. Like more active or standing up taller/carry themselves upright is probably rooster. Also keep an eye out for a bigger crest and wattles for the chicks, and bigger/thicker legs. Bigger means rooster. Remember to compare your chicks of the same breed to see what's different.

If you really still can't tell, just wait about 18-20 weeks and there will start laying eggs but I'm sure you would have figured it out by then.
