Comparing quail sizes

400

Wow what a quail egg!! From my XLD JMF jumbos.

Nice egg! Was it a double yolker? Seems like most my eggs that size are. I will say the JMF birds may not be a larger bird then the CL birds but they defiantly do produce a larger egg on average. Almost all my JMF eggs are over 14g, but anything over 20g seems to have two yolks.

Just gathered it tonight, so haven't seen if it's. double yoke or not. Out of the 17 hens I seperated to keep for breeders the smallest egg today was 13.5, most in the 14-15s.

They are big eggs and big Quail i cant wait for mine to lay my dog things the battery for breeders is her personal treat dispencer so we are making a grow out and a new pen for the breeders with a heated or cooled box at the end .
a feeder that free feeds inside to insure no mice or rats and the waterer that flows in with a heater inside the 50 g barrol as well as one thats on the troff.

FYI
http://www.foxnews.com/health/2013/...idespread-in-us-chicken-consumer-group-finds/
MG is one of these Super bugs its here in oregon and everywhere only 3 hatcheries for chickens and turkeys in the USA that is free of everything on the NPIP list and they test for everything .

Hoovers is one of them
the one in Hawaii is too expensive to ship eggs and then there is one in NY

be careful tammy

PS robby gets tested so i am not worried

This weekend finally got a chance to clean up the grow out pen and weigh and move my jumbo chicks outside. I had 70 chicks make it, lost a few to spay leg and some to my mistakes. Although I have kept the CL and JMF birds still separate breeding pens this group of chicks is a mixture of both pure lines because I am planning to butcher them all and not keep any for breeders and I didn't want to have to mess with two separate brooders and grow pens. I was really happy to see their average weights are better then first generation, I'm calling these chicks F1.

Nice pictures Tammy! It is amazing how fast they grow. I did some spot weights on my batch of over sixty F1 babies at 5 weeks old, they averaged about 8 1/2 ounces. I will be butchering a bunch this weekend at six weeks old, they are eating an outstanding amount of food right now, probably 8-9 pounds of food a day for 65ish chicks. I may keep a pen of the largest chicks to see how big they get, depends on how the butchering is going, lol.

Wish you lived Closer id buy some off your hands . New hatch today so far 3 YIPPY they where so cold when they got here i didnt think any would make it box was turned on side Mail lady had a full car so she did baby them as she is also an animal lover but she called first to make sure i told her as well as Robby packs she could probably drop the box and crack just 3 if that .

i have not weighed them yes but today week 4 my little boys where doing the male call LOL i think i have 50/50 so im gonna have some nice males to choose from thats the hard part .
for me i think ill pick the top girls first body type and make sure they have the back ends for those big eggs . narrow hips will get freezer camp . so far i dont see any of those .
then ill choose my trios of girls by weight . then do the same with the roos . keeping a couple extra trios . i got a nice pair of whites that will be in the doggy treat dispencer LOL she loves her Quail eggs and that will give her joy and ill be able to get my main meat bird eggs to the bator .

Talked to Robby today and he sound very sick he got that Darned Flu going around . why do bad things happen to the good people ? just beyond me he has such a Huge heart Tammy

Today I processed the six week old F1 birds. I ended up butchering 56 quail and kept the largest 9. Out of the 56 quail I got over 18 pounds of meat for the table and almost 10 pounds of offal for dog food.

JMF 6 wk hen range (190-255) average: 218.6 gram
JMF 6 wk roo range (197-246) average: 220.2 gram

CL 6 week hen range (216-296) average: 256.3 gram
CL 6 week roo range (213-292) average: 245.6 gram

F1 six week range (201- 318) average: 254 gram

This makes the average wt at six weeks 9 ounces. I kept the largest 7 females and 2 males, all of whom are 10ounces or larger. I have decided to keep one pen of these F1 birds just to see how they finish out even not knowing which line they came from. I hope to also keep separate F1 groups from each of the two lines and compare the 'mutts' to the 'pures'.
