Crested Welbar ?

So interesting that I found this thread, I have the same situation going on. I bought 4 “welbars” last month.. one passed early on so I have 3 remaining. One has developed a crest just like yours! Do you have any updates? Does that one happen to be laying yet? So curious to find out!

The one crested girl is the only one laying as of yet. She lays either a very small olive egg or skips a few days then lays a large double yolk olive egg. Hopefully her system figures it out soon and gets consistent. The other three are squatting and look ready, but are taking their time. But they all turned out to be very pretty girls.

Thank you for replying! Hmm I guess I wouldn’t be upset at that.. I do already have multiple green layers 🙄 and wanted some more dark brown lol. Oh well, we shall see! Mine are just about 7 weeks or so, so I have a while yet.
I wonder if it was supposed to be an olive egger that was a legbar cross. Mine look identical, I’ll have to get a picture tomorrow.

When me and a friend placed an order for (10) chicks of the same breed and gender from Purely Poultry they only sent us (5) The other (5) chicks they sent is looked the same but were a different breed (we could barely tell them apart) We considered ordering more chicks someplace else later but decided it was too expensive. I've looked locally but haven't been able to find any of the breed I ordered yet.I'm still searching.

I suspect someone at the hatchery grabbed a chick out of the wrong bin and shipped it to Tractor Supply along with the rest .This would explain why there weren't anymore like it.

I think you have legbar x welsumer mixes which is being sold as Olive Eggers by several hatcheries. They look exactly like gold legbars usually, except with a smaller or nonexistent crest. I can see how someone unfamiliar with them might see "legbar and welsumer" and think "welbar".

We had a development today. Of my 4 original “Welbars,” one had the crest and laid olive eggs from mid October until she started molting recently. The other three all looked bright red and ready but no eggs, then started squatting last week, and two laid their first eggs today. They were indeed brown, and more brown once I rinsed the bloom off. Yay!

So they were definitely marked with all hanging information from the hatchery at TSC as Welbars and no other chipmunk breeds in the store at the time to switch bins, but at least 1 is an olive egger. But since she laid 2 months before them and is the only one molting right now, I’m guessing the other 3 are the same whatever they are. It’s nice to have brown eggs since I already had olive laying Easter Eggers, but otherwise breed doesn’t matter since they’re just pets with benefits. Now I have blue, green, pink, and brown in my egg baskets. :)
