Deaf rooster?

I have a rooster that I think may be deaf. I let him out one morning and his comb, which is pretty large, was half black. I've noticed that since then, he hasn't crowed and has been very skittish. He doesn't react at all when I make any noises around him, I was wondering if anyone else has seen this or knows what it could be or any treatments?

My rooster also has a large comb, and it turns purplish black. I am not sure, but I think it might be something to do with how much exercise he gets. Once his heart rate increases, it turns red again (incidentally, his combs turns bright red if it is not already when he mates). Being skittish could just be his personality, personally, I prefer a more skittish, respectful rooster who knows my boundaries and respects them, so therefore won't attack me. Is he acting strange in any other ways? How old is he? Are there any competing roosters?
