I'm new to chickens, but I've had a group of chicks for alost six weeks now. My very favorite chick was a little Porcelain D'uccle named Isla. She was so friendly. She'd sit on my shoulder or let me rub her belly without any complaint. She was the first to cock that head and peer up at me when I came out to the brooder. Then she'd perch on the side and wait for attention. She went missing Saturday, and I was completely baffled how she could've escaped. Well, I went to refill the feed this morning and gasped as I picked it up. Some way, some how, when I filled the feeder Friday night she must've gotten under it when I sat it back in the brooder. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought she'd fit under there. I imagine it was a terrible death, and I feel so guilty. How could I not have noticed?! Bless her sweet heart.
