I finally caved and processed my BBB tom turkey. He was a year old and getting too big for his bones. Once it was almost all over, I had a nasty surprise - a giant abscess right in the breast. We chose not to eat him, after doing some research, and I feel horrible about that. Of course, I'd have felt worse about making my family sick.

I wrote it all up, with pictures, on my blog: http://www.cowgirljules.com/2011/06/12/giant-turkey/

Very interesting read. Thank you for sharing. It's a shame that you weren't able to eat him after all that work, but yes - it was a learning experience. He was HUGE.

Taking my 1 yr old heritage bred to butcher tomorrow AM.
He got too mean during breeding season . . . six babies on the ground so far, I hope one will replace him.

Awesome read and thank you for the pictures and information. I think some birds are given to us for us to learn on and others to feed us. It's all good!
