Hey all,
I have depopulated after an M.S. outbreak. How do I properly disinfect the coop and run before adding new chicks? Everything I have read is for mycoplasma gallisepticum and it seems like it lasts on surfaces longer than mycoplasma synovaie. I have read that MS only can last 4 days outside the host body, so disinfecting and letting the coop sit empty for two weeks seems unnecessary. I have 7 week old chicks that need to go outside asap, but I obviously do not want them to become infected.

My coop is untreated wood painted with exterior stain and sealant. I do have access to a power washer. I am concerned that I will have trouble finding certain disinfectants due to the current pandemic. I think I do have some bleach though.

Thank you!

https://www.hotfoot.com/labels/sanisol-label.pdfVirkon destroys just about everything. You should be able to get it at a good feed store or online.
This stuff is worth the price, I never use anything else.
Thanks, I found the product sheet and it mentions two other types of myco but not the synovaie. Trying to find some literature on that disinfectant because I can actually get my hand on it soon.

Sorry that you needed to depopulate your flock. Many experts are recommending mixing 4 tsp (20ml) of bleach with a quart or liter of water, and using it as a disinfectant, even good for corona virus. I would soak or spray, let is sit for a bit, and the rinse with water. Then let it air dry completely and ventilate.

Virkon S tablets mixed with water, and sold on Amazon are very good to use as a disinfectant in hen houses. Mycoplasma species also can be killed by 2% chlorhexidene, which can be found online.

Thanks, most of them got very sick and needed to be culled. I just called my state's dept of agriculture and someone also recommended Virkon. He did not say to rinse it though. Just to soak and let dry. Does that sound right? He did say its a good rule of thumb to wait two weeks though, and if I have extra tablets to go ahead and spray the soil some.

I meant to rinse the bleach water. Novlasan is a concentrate of chlorhexidene, and can be mixed with water according to label directions for cleaning coops and equipment. 2% chlorhexidene can also be found. Here are some links to read:

I went ahead and ordered the tablets.

Coop was thoroughly cleaned and disinfected last Sunday (April 5th) and all the mulch in the run was removed and the soil underneath was also sprayed with Virkon S. I have new material to put in the run. These poor girls are ready to go out. Is it a terrible idea to put them out now?

If it's warm enough, go for it. Make sure they have sufficient heat at night..
