For the last week or so I have been finding broken eggs in the nesting box almost daily. Today I found another broken egg (really in pieces) with most of the egg eaten/missing. Half of the shell was outside of the nesting box. I have only 2 hens and they don't usually break the eggs.
I live in Sunnyvale, CA what kind of animal other than a clumsy chicken might do this?
At night I frequently see opossum's and racoons in the backyard but they cannot get into the coop. Will other birds come into the coop when the chickens are out and steel eggs? I see crows, ravens, steller jays, blue jays a lot in the area. Also squirrels. As far as a rat is concerned I would be surprised if it got past my 3 outside cats that are great rodent hunters.
