Oh, and every year we have skunks clear out yellow jacket nests in our yard, or try to get in the compost, and for what its worth, they are major earth movers. Anywhere they excavate around here, they leave impressive cavernous holes after a single night's work, at least a foot in diameter and up to several feet deep. Now whether the holes are due to them trying to get at a broad area, or if they simply dig about their own body mass size, I can't say. I don't know enough about underground hives and skunk digging behavior.
They also rarely seem to raise a stink unless they are startled. Had our pets never tried to scuffle with one of them as they dug their treasures I would never have know it was skunks. Since they do a phenomenal job of handling any ground hornet nests we get, we have always tolerated their presence, at least before we got chickens.
And weasels have a very foul odor as well.
