Hi - we just got ducklings and planning their outside run. I am planning to get a stock tank as a pool for them but can’t decide between 1’ or 2’ depth.

Pro for the 2 foot: I want them to be able to dive under and submerge
Pro for the 1 foot: Less water waste and easier entry

We have Swedish and Cayuga so they will be fairly large.

Hello, welcome to BYC :frow

1’ should be plenty high. The largest pool for my ducks is around 9 - 10” high, and their feet do not touch / barely touch the bottom. They can dive under and fully submerge just fine. It’s very easy for them to get in, like you said, and certainly much less water waste.

My adults are a Pekin, a Swedish mix, and a Khaki mix, so they should be around the same size as your ducks will be.

I think it depends on whether you're going to keep the pool to adulthood, but I think 1' is better for ducklings. I had several adult Rouen's and they did fine in a 1' pool. They couldn't fully dive and submerge but it was enough for them to take a bath and have fun.
