I know it's early and I'm probably just gonna have to wait, but would love to hear any thoughts from Polish experts on my 6 week old Polishes. I have my suspicions, but try not to get too confident since at this stage the crest is as much a function of how much the other chicks like to peck at them (and everyone seems to love to peck at my poor Polishes crests!). Tia...

All have equally skinny legs, no combs or wattles to speak of, and no redness in face. All equally spastic and flighty, like every Polish I've ever had.

Tolbunt (anyone's guess? Kinda crazy fro, but feathers more rounded...)

I'm not seeing any real signs of any of them being a cockerel yet. No redness at the comb, face or wattles. Crests are tricky at such a young age because they can look completely different after the first molt. I think the white crested black is a pullet. Other than that I would wait a bit and watch for comb/wattle/facial redness. Those that get it before 15 weeks or so are probably males.

If this helps, my white crested blue is a male, and my white crested black is a female. Both are 6 weeks old.

I think you’re right about them, and the last I would guess hen only because the crest feathers aren’t as sharp-looking as they are in on the cockerels

While that is true. At this age it is harder. Crest are a fairly accurate way of sexing polish chicks. (Better than wing sexing feed store chicks) Yes they can change a lot within the spand of say a week.

I’d say sexing by crest has around a 70% accuracy rate. (Once they are 10-12 weeks of course) at this age it drops by 10%. However it could be useful if you just want a rough estimate of your males to females. I would not advise others to use it like the chicks were sexlinked. (Meaning a 100% accurate sexing method)
