I convinced Duckling's bios to bring her to the doctor for an ear infection. Plus bronchitis. She's been happy to be here instead of school.

Hello Sally, How long would you recommend waiting to crack a shell on a chick you can hear peeping and moving inside but has not managed to Pip through the shell?

The egg is a dark olive and I have not been able to see anything inside, i can just hear it.

You should see something at this point. You might just need a better light.
Regardless, start at the very top. Once it's open, you can see firsthand what is happening. If there are veins to absorb, etc.

well, the egg had stopped peeping, still could not see anything through it. Opened it up and the chick was gone. Now I wish I had just started cracking it a few hours ago.

Since it did not pip or zip, there was likely something wrong with the chick. You can sometimes save them but then many of those die anyway or are a struggle.

You did a good job! Do not beat yourself up over it.
