Hi All,

I’ll preface this post by saying that I know it's too early to sex these guys/gals (except for the one obvious cockerel), but I thought I would start a thread to see if anyone has any suspicions about them and I will update it every two weeks until the sexes are known. It’s fun and perhaps useful for some who are also looking for clues at this early age.

They are EEs - most of the parentage isn't know, though I have some suspicions based on comb type and colouration. I hatched five of them from eggs I traded for - all the eggs were either light blue or light green. The sixth (#2 in this post) is a Salmon Faverolles cross Blue Wheaten Ameraucana from our flock - should be a pullet based on colouration. This is the first time I have had EEs, and they are already maturing much faster then the other breeds I am use to. They are currently 4 weeks old (born February 14th). Sorry for the cheesy Valentine’s Day themed nicknames 🤣

Chick #1 - Cupid (definite cockerel)

Too young to say for sure. Other than the first pic, obvious boy, nothing on the others makes me think male yet. A few more weeks!

We had an accidental EE male that took awhile to know he was a boy, his comb took awhile to color or grow however, he did get red shoulders early on. Right now, we have 4 week old EE, and one is most likely a boy (based on red shoulders and more colored/prominent comb).

I suspect I’ll have at least another cockerel or two hiding in there - possibly #6 based on its brazen attitude, but I really don’t have too much of a clue about the rest yet. No red patches on the shoulders, but I’m sure that I’ll see more evidence of potential cockerels shortly as they continue to feather in and mature 💕

Both pullets and cockerels can be brazen at that age. The two I would keep an eye on are 4 and 5. Nothing definite, but the stance of 4 and 5 look a little male to me. 1 is the only obvious cockerel.

Thanks for this. And yes, I’ve had brazen ones turn out to be pullets before. With the Cochins and Marans I normally raise, it’s often a bit more clear cut, but these EEs are a whole new experience and I feel like I’ve read a fair number of threads where pea comb EEs can look pullet-like and then end up as late maturing cockerels (if they don’t fit one of the sex specific colourations).

Okay! Time for an update at six weeks with my current thoughts.
