hi everyone, helping you can help me figure out what is happening here! We currently have one hen (waiting till Newcastle disease is more contained before we get more) who is a 2 and a half year Rhode Island Red. Went to go check on her as it is quite hot today! I found a broken egg shell in run (picture below) that had nothing in it. On further examination, there was a wet pile in the nesting box where she normally lays. I’m not sure whether the egg broke as it fell and she decided to eat it and drag shell out to run area or whether it broke inside and we should be watching for egg peronditist. She didn’t lay for 17 months which the vet thought was due to stress from being evacuated from fire. She started laying again about 3 weeks ago and got s physical from vet along with a calcium shot. Is there any way to tell what happened and what are signs for internal laying problems and buildup?

It looks like she ate it. That has happened a few time with my moms chickens. Some how they break the egg after laying it and then eat it.
Thank you for your response! As she is behaving normally we think that it might have hit the side of the egg box and cracked and she ate it! Will have to keep an eye on that!
