Three of my nine birds have started laying eggs. My first girl is a good 2 weeks in and laying 6 eggs a week. However she started laying in the middle of the night and not going to her nesting box. The first egg I got was undamaged, but the second was cracked.
I haven't been using lighting at all at night, but after the second egg I added a small solar puck light that barely lights up the area near the nesting boxes. It allows them to see where they are going and so far no more poop tray eggs.
My issue is that I want to add a permanent low (perhaps dimmable) light that is very dim so they can see to move around but one that won't interfere with their sleeping or mess with their cycles. Any suggestions? I'm thinking solar but would like advice.
