February/March Grow-a-long

Well for the first time today noticed Noire (the roo we kept) taking advantage of one of the ladies. We haven't seen any eggs yet, but now at 16 weeks. How long before laying will a roo start mating?

Depends
A roo would mate once his of age, be it willingly or forcefully
Hens on the other hand won't willingly let a roo mount them if they're not close to lay so if your hen was mounted without fuss then she's pretty close to laying

How they’ve grown :’) I ended up keeping 4, and depending on the colors of the eggs I get I might sell one more. They’ve recently been looking very curiously at the nesting house, so hopefully I’ll be getting some eggs soon!

After 3 years I finally expanded my run to from 10x10 to 10x50. I only plan in adding a few more bantams because my coop is still relatively small

Edit: omggg first egggg (olive egg on left)

Couple of days late for posting, but we got our first egg of Friday, and she has laid one everyday since. Tiny little things, a light pale green, which was unexpected for a chicken that came from a white egg (father must have been opal legbar, only rooster that might have had blue genetics).

My kids sent me a picture while I was at work yesterday, the lighter blue is the first from a new hen, looks like her father was also the Opel legbar.

The last hen that we have from that hatch I am also expecting either a blue or olive egg from, so we came up rather blue heavy for a bunch of back yard mutt eggs.

I forgot all about this thread. Was going to start one about waiting for eggs since I figured those from the hatch a long were close or recently got new eggs. I kept 1 from my March hatch. She is 22 weeks now and still waiting. But she is a splash Brahma that the breeder has been working on, she hatched from a green egg and will hopefully lay a green egg. This is her from today.

I got my first egg on August 9th.

And I caught Martha in the box, so I believe she's the first one to lay. She was the only yellow chick.

Then she tried to go broody, but I managed to break her of it.

And remember the little chick who fluttered up into my hand?

Here he is, 6 months old, "Joel".:

He's the Boss Roo, and is coexisting (so far) with his brother, "Samuel":

Sadly last week our only white chicken, rapidly got sick and then died 2 days later. A few days before that she had started laying shell-less eggs. It's a shame as she laid a pretty blue egg. From our march hatch we started with 12 eggs, 1 was clear, 9 hatched, of those we had 6 roo's (kept 1) and 3 hens, one of which just died. Also getting a very pretty pale green egg, and the other hen I am not sure is laying yet (the last couple of days we have gotten 2 new distinct eggs, but I am not sure if any are hers, or our 5 younger (April) hens as they should all be starting to lay.
