First incubator hatch, with shipped and local eggs

Day 18- It’s lockdown day!

12 eggs made it to this point, 11 with very happy movement and one far too dark to see into. I’m so excited for hatch day

4/12 shipped eggs
6/8 local eggs
2/2 home eggs

Day 22!

First pip was around 4pm on day 20, and that chick hatched early on day 21. Final counts

2/12 shipped eggs
5/8 local eggs
2/2 home eggs

1 shipped egg had a large saddle air cell, was malpositioned, and died in the egg. The other was my dark egg, which proved to not be developed at all upon opening. The local egg that didn’t make it hatched with a large yolk sack and exposed intestine.

I feel a bit down on myself that I got such a crummy hatch rate overall, but it was definitely a learning experience and not all in my control. For next time, I will probably start turning from day 1, and just not candle at all until at least day 10.

I think getting any chicks from shipped eggs is a feat! Don't be hard on yourself. Nine chicks is a great number!

I ordered from Bresse Farms (NPIP certified) and I grabbed 1 dozen each of Swedish Flower hen and Crested Cream Legbar.

Gosh, I loved my Swedish flower hen. She was from a commercial hatchery but still gorgeous and fun to watch.
