Mine have been consuming crushed oyster shell...the type that looks like white grit. The brand I buy was out so I bought "flaked" oyster shell instead. Does it matter which one we use? Is one option better than the other?

Ok, thank you. I didn't even realize I had bought "flakes* until I poured it in. It couldn't be any dustier when poured!Both are fine as long as they'll eat it. What is worth avoiding is crushed that comes like powder rather than lumps.
