In the Brooder
Welp, it's working so far. I have been feeding them laying pellet on occasion (50lbs every 2 months for 9 birds). Besides that they eat lawn clippings and kitchen scraps plus whatever insect life they find. My run is about 8x20 and they sometimes are let into my >.25 acre yard. But honestly I've managed to keep a huge amount of insect life in their run and I think that the bulk of their food comes from that.We are in central VA too! Just started a flock. Let's exchange notes!
My key has been keeping the soil "alive". I mulch their yard with hay (which I will, next year use as mulch in the garden and will replace with the hay from their deep liter coop bedding, which in turn will get fresh hay). And about half of their run is covered in foliage, mostly weedy bushes that I've allowed to regrow from the stumps because the chickens love to run underthem and they shade the bare soil.
